Most West Bromwich calls open the same way. HD-over-coax earns its keep here. Keep the run. Swap the head and the recorder and 5MP arrives down a cable that was shifting an analogue picture. Hikvision Turbo and Dahua HDCVI sit on old RG59 without complaining. The cable is the variable.

Copper-clad aluminium is what catches people out on this side of the city. Plenty of the estate work towards Wednesbury and Oldbury went in during the cheap-cable years, and CCA will pass a wiggle test at the near end while quietly starving a camera at the far end of the run, which is the fault you get called back for in January. Look at the braid. Silver rather than copper, and the re-pull goes in the quote. We keep cable for that and the recorders to go on the end of it.
Put domes on the frontage and get them high
Turrets look better. I would still not hang one on a unit frontage here. The eyeball sits in an open cradle, so anything long enough to reach it knocks the aim ten degrees off, and nobody notices until there is an incident and somebody finally sits down with the footage to find the camera has spent three months watching a wall. A dome in a cast housing takes the same knock and carries on covering the gate. Ask for the IK rating, then ask where it applies. IK10 on the bubble counts for nothing if the camera hangs off a plastic junction box screwed into soft render. Use the manufacturer’s back box and stainless fixings.
Height is cheaper. Above four metres on an industrial wall most of the vandalism stops being your problem, because whoever fancies a swing at a camera is not fetching a ladder first. Stone Cross and Charlemont do not give you that. Two storeys and a soffit is what you have.
One thing is worth an extra channel. Where a gate opens onto a road with traffic on it, put a camera on the plate line at a tight angle instead of hoping the wide shot reads a registration. It will not. A 4mm lens across a yard gives a grey smear.
Coming down the A41 without clipping the zone
The A41 through Handsworth is the run in. Over the Oldbury side or dropping off the motorway, M5 J1 puts you onto the same road. The last mile catches people. Do not let the A41 carry you into the city centre, because everything inside the A4540 Middleway is the Clean Air Zone and an older van pays for that daily.
Where the A41 reaches the Middleway at Hockley Circus, join the ring road and follow it round to Camp Hill Circus. We sit just off it, outside the boundary, so collecting carries no charge. The Middleway is the edge rather than the zone. Turn off its inner side and you are in. Run the registration through Birmingham City Council’s zone checker first if the van is older or borrowed.

Most lines are not held in depth. We list around 890 lines across CCTV, intruder and networking, which is more part numbers than a counter this size sits on. Anything we do not hold we can usually get in for next day, provided the order reaches us before noon. After noon it slips. Friday slips further.

Coming down the A41 the temptation is to carry straight on towards the centre, and that is what catches people. The council’s zone checker settles it, because the answer depends on the vehicle.
The coax in my unit has been there for years. Is it worth keeping?
Usually, yes. Cut a metre off and look at the core and the braid. Solid copper under a copper braid carries 5MP over coax happily, so the cameras and the recorder change and the cable stays put. Copper-clad aluminium on a long haul to a back gate is the one to re-pull.
I am fitting in B71 on Monday morning. When should I order?
Thursday, realistically. Anything we do not hold is usually a next-day order if it reaches us before noon, so Thursday morning leaves Friday to chase whatever came short. Ordering Friday afternoon for a Monday start is asking the carrier for a favour.
Do I need a trade account to buy from you?
Not over the counter. List price is open to anybody. An account gets you trade pricing, and it is the only route to the lines restricted to the trade, so it earns its place if West Bromwich is on your regular run.
